Course Learning Objectives

  • Provide grounding and co-develop students’ understanding of humanistic inquiry, especially those questions that are approachable through digital means
  • Strengthen students’ data acumen, digital skills, and research techniques to build a digital portfolio
  • Foster collaborative project work; ability to explore and create knowledge as part of an integrated team

Course Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate proficiency in several digital humanities competencies (e.g. digital communication; data management, analysis and presentation; critical making, design and development)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social, cultural, political and ethical implications of digital technologies, scholarship, and artistic production
  • Gain hands-on experience with collaborative, creative, and interdisciplinary digital projects

Schedule and Time Expectations

Student workload: 14-16 hours per week

  • Attend Class Office Hours / Labs / Project Team Meetings: 4-6 hours per week (flexible scheduling based on time zone availability)
  • Readings and Assignments: 3-5 hours per week
  • Checkpoints and Assessments: 0-2 hour per week
  • Project Work: 3-4 hours per week

Technology Requirements

  • Regular access to Desktop/Laptop computer (PC or Mac), webcam, microphone/headset. 
  • High speed broadband internet access daily throughout the course.
  • Web meeting client – Class meetings will be conducted in Zoom.   
  • Access to the online course tools and platform (e.g. Learning Management System, Slack Group Chat) will be provided to all students enrolled in the class.

Course Grades

  • Grading Scale / Final Course Grade: In cases where students take the course for institutional credit, the final letter grade will be recorded by the Registrar at the student’s home institution (transcript) based on the appropriate grading scale determined by the home institution. 
  • Course Incompletes: The policies of the institution where the student is registered will determine if an incomplete may be granted.
  • Course Extensions: The policies of the institution where the student is registered will determine if an extension may be granted.
  • Option for Pass/Fail Grade: The policies of the institution where the student is registered will determine if a Pass/Fail grade may be recorded.

Course Evaluations

  • Students will complete a course evaluation. Student responses will be collected anonymously and will be kept confidential.  Data will be used solely for the purposes of gaining feedback on the course experience and improving future offerings. 

Fees

  • No additional student fees or tuition will be collected or exchanged for the 2022 course. Future LACOL offerings (2023 or later) may have applicable fees.

Academic Conduct

  • Students are expected to abide by the rules governing academic conduct specified by their own institution, student handbook or honor code.  
  • Cases of alleged misconduct will be referred to the faculty/administrative liaisons of the relevant institutions for appropriate review and redress.

Title IX – Accessibility

Accommodations are available for students with documented disabilities according to the guidelines established by their home institution. In advance of or during the summer term, students are directed to contact their local office of Disability Services (or equivalent) to discuss individual circumstances. Early action will help to ensure that an approved accommodation can be implemented in a timely way.
